Success can be defined in many different ways, but in this case we will just say it is achieving a goal.  Though I am only 23 years old, I have dealt with my fair share of both successes and failures in life.  I am not afraid to admit my failures because every failure teaches you something which will help you be successful down the road.  It’s all about playing the long game and not looking at what you are dealing with right this second.  Throughout my failures I have analyzed why I failed.  I have also studied my successes and learned as much as I possibly could about what they all have in common, and what my failures consist of so I know what to avoid.  This strategy has allowed me to break things down into 4 main categories that all just happen to start with a p.

  1. Passion

What do you enjoy?  For many it may be traveling, or sports, or hair and makeup.  Whatever it may be, the ultimate goal is to find what you’re passionate about and find a way to monetize it.  The reason being passionate about your work is so important is because as humans, we naturally try harder at things that we want to be doing.  More effort leads to greater results which ultimately leads to more success.  One thing you have to keep in mind while doing this step is to be 100% honest with yourself.  Don’t try to convince yourself that you’re passionate about something because it may be the hot ticket item right now.  If you do, you will fail.  This isn’t a decision that should be made overnight.  Take some time to reflect on what truly brings you the most joy and happiness and run with it!

2.  Perception

You are more of a self fulfilling prophecy than you may believe.  Perception is key to being extremely successful.  Thomas Eidson was quoted when creating the light bulb “I have not failed.”  “I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.”  10,000 different times he attempted to create the light bulb with no success.  The reason he didn’t fail is not because he didn’t make mistakes, it’s because he refused to give up until he found the right way to do it.  Had he tried to create the light bulb and gotten frustrated after 100 unsuccessful attempts who knows where we would be today.  Choose to view things in a positive manner.  Your future successes are relying on it.

3. Patience

This is one that I have a very hard time with, and I’m guessing many of you do as well.  You may wonder why our patience have dropped dramatically for the Millennial generation, but the answer is quite obvious.  It’s because we literally have everything at our fingertips so we don’t have to be patient anymore!  Do you want to talk to your best friend that lives 2,000 miles away?  Send them a text message or Snapchat.  You don’t have to wait for a response either, it’s instantaneous after they see it.  The ugly truth about real success is that it doesn’t happen overnight.  Rome wasn’t built in a day, but if it was, it would have collapsed the next day.   All things worth doing are worth doing well, and doing something well takes countless hours of time, energy, and effort.  Play the long game to build an empire!

4. Perseverance

Success is not a straight line.  There are countless roadblocks that you must navigate to eventually find success.  If it was easy everyone would do it, and we would have a much smaller wage gap between the rich and the poor. Even some of the most successful people in the world have had their fair share of challenges that they’ve had to overcome to get where they are.  Here is a link to one of my favorite examples of perseverance the story of Terry Fox. It is easy to throw in the towel and give up when things get tough, but overcoming challenges is what makes you grow and realize your full potential in life.  I beg you to persevere in the face of despair.

Now is the time to put your knowledge to work.  I challenge you to try.  Life is too short to not find your full potential, and you can only achieve that through trial and error.  It may take you a month, a year, 10 years, to find your niche. But when you do, with the help of these 4 p’s, you will know how it feels to achieve greatness.
