Millennials are constantly changing the work environment. How can your business possibly keep up?
The traditional 9-5 work day came to be on June 25, 1868… 149 years ago… We haven’t adjusted it in 149 years. To put that in perspective for you, here are some of the things that have come to be in that time;
2) Light bulbs
4) X-ray machines
All groundbreaking inventions, yet we continue to follow a plan put in place 149 years ago. Millennials have decided that it’s time to take control of their lives again and escape the outdated 9-5.
1. Productivity has increased 10x with the technological revolution
One invention that was intentionally left off of the list above is one of the most powerful of all. The internet. With the stroke of a keyboard, we can learn what the weather is like on the other side of the world.
Because of the technological revolution and automation tools, productivity has increased 10 fold. It is an unfortunate reality, but for the first time in history, employees are actually being punished for being too good at their jobs.
2. We’re all sick of feeling like someone else is in control of our time
Time is our most valuable asset. Why have you been willing to just sit back and leave it up to someone else to determine how you spend it? The answer is simple, it’s all you’ve ever known.
Before the development of the internet, it was extremely important to be in the office. It was the only way to interact with coworkers face to face. Now, we have apps like Skype and Facetime, and every business person has a smart phone attached to the hip. The office environment, for many businesses, is becoming obsolete.
3. Remote work is more accessible than ever
This isn’t about having an office/team environment anymore. This is about old school managers lacking trust and needing to feel in control of their team. How do you expect to build a good team if the pillar of a good team, trust, isn’t in the equation? It’s impossible.
The internet has given employees the ability to streamline many jobs. Work that used to take days can now be outsourced and completed in minutes. Millennials have been tagged as “lazy” among many other negative things. It often times looks as if they have nothing they are working on, but it’s actually on the contrary. Millennials have gotten so good at their jobs that they’re able to complete eight hours worth of work in two.
The 9-5 will die sooner than later thanks to the ever-growing question that Millennials fearlessly ask – Why?
1 way to keep your business from dying with it
ADAPT. Don’t fear change, rather be the driver of it. Become obsessed with business trends and build credibility among your peers. Get ahead of the curve and anticipate change rather than waiting until it’s your only option. You’ll be glad you did.
